Know How to Increase Outlook Mailbox Size Limit

Microsoft Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007, 2003 support UNICODE PST (Personal Storage Table) and OST(Offline Storage Table). It contains all your messages and other Outlook data items. Generally, every version of Outlook has a specified limit of the size PST file.

  1. For Outlook versions older than 2010, the default maximum recommended Outlook PST file size is 20 GB.
  2. For Outlook 2010 & above versions, the default maximum size for PST data of Outlook is 50 GB.

But sometimes users need more storage capacity to store huge amount of data. In that case, they want to increase Outlook PST file size limit. So, first, we are going to share the manual method to set the Outlook mailbox size limit.

How to Increase Outlook Mailbox Size Limit Manually?

Outlook registry editor has four registry entries that help users to limit the size of both the .pst and the .ost files. Let’s explore each one of them.

MaxFileSize registry entry: It determines the absolute maximum size for .pst and .ost files to which it can grow. The Outlook does not permit to increase the size of the data file beyond its maximum limit.

WarnFileSize registry entry: It determines the maximum data that both the .pst and the .ost files can have. And if the maximum data is reached, neither the .pst nor the .ost files are permitted to add any more data.

MaxLargeFileSize registry entry: To set the maximum size up to which Outlook data file can be expanded UNICODE.

WarnLargeFileSize registry entry: To set the maximum allowable data for Outlook data (PST / OST) UNICODE.

Important Note: The WarnLargeFileSize and WarnFileSize registry entries do not enable Outlook to warn you before the file size limit is reached.

Now, let’s see how to use these entries to increase Outlook mailbox size limit.

1: Open “Run” command & type “regedit”. Hit “Enter”.

2: Inside Registry editor, look at the left pane and under “Computer”, navigate to the following registry path according to your Outlook version.

Outlook 2016 : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\PST

Outlook 2013: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook\PST

Outlook 2010: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\PST

Outlook 2007:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\PST

Outlook 2003: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\PST

3: Now right-click on Outlook >> expand New, and then click on Key.

4: Type in PST >> press on ENTER.

5: Now right click on PST >> click on New >> then click on DWORD value.

6: Then, type in MaxFileSize >> then press on ENTER twice.

7: Now in the Edit DWORD Value window, first choose Decimal option in Base, and provide the value in the Value data box. Hit OK.

8: Repeat steps 3 to 7 for creating another DWORD WarnFileSize.

9: Repeat steps 3 to 7 for creating another DWORD MaxLargeFileSize.

10: Repeat steps 3 to 7 for creating another DWORD WarnLargeFileSize.

11: Now, exit from the registry editor.

This is the manual way to increase Outlook mailbox file size limit. But the process is very complicated and lengthy. In case if you skip any step then it may damage your Outlook PST data file. So, it is always advisable to take precautions to prevent large-sized PST files.

Preventive Measures to Avoid PST File Corruption

1: Regularly delete unwanted Outlook emails.

2: Remove duplicate emails.

3: Empty the deleted items folder.

4: Move some of the contents from your existing PST into each of the new PST files.

What to do If your Outlook PST file is Corrupt?
