Do you want to export SQL server database schema? Then, keep reading this article because I am going to tell you exact 2 ways to do it.

In this blog, I have explained two methods to do it:

  1. Using SQL Server Management Studio
  2. Using Automated Software

I will also tell you why automated software is a better option.

Export SQL Server Database Schema Using SSMS

SQL Server Management Studio, also called SSMS, is an integrated environment developed by Microsoft for configuring, monitoring, and administering database instances of SQL Server.

Perform the following steps to export schemas using SSMS:

Step-1: At the left pane, select the database with right click for which you would like to export the schema structure.

Step-2: Choose “Tasks” and then, choose “Generate Scripts”.

Step-3: Click on “Next” at the welcome screen.

Step-4: Click “Next >” at the “Select the database objects to script” option.

Step-5: Click “Advanced”, “Advanced Scripting Options” window will appear. Here you have to select “Types of data to script” and then choose the “Schema only” option if you want only schema. If you want data as well, choose “Schema and data”.

Step-6: Choose the destination path to export the file, and click on “Next”.

Step-7: Lastly click on “Finish”.

DRAWBACKS OF SSMS

SQL Server Management Studio is a nice option if you are handling a small database. But, for the larger databases, it will take a lot of time and effort. Also, there is a higher chance of getting errors. Hence, the presence of a technical expert is much needed.

Therefore, I will suggest you to go for a professional and automated software for exporting SQL server database records and schemas that is SQL Server Migration Tool.

Why This Automated Software?

In simple words, it is fast, robust and risk-free.

In technical terms, the tool comes with many features that gives you 100% control of SQL data transfer within the network or outside the network.
